    Theory of electrical conductivities of ferrogels

    Conductive organic polymers can be formulated with polymers that incorporate fine dispersed metallic particles. In this work, we present a general model for ferrogels which are chemically cross-linked polymer networks swollen with a ferrofluid. Our aim is to study the effect of the shape and/or material (conductivity) anisotropy on the effective electrical conductivity of the ferrogel in the presence of an external magnetic field. Our theory can reproduce the known results, and provides a link between the particle property and orientation distribution and the effective electrical conductivity. To this end, we find that material (conductivity) anisotropies are more important to yield a high effective electrical conductivity than shape anisotropies, while magnetic fields can offer a correction.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure

    Robust Detection of Moving Human Target in Foliage-Penetration Environment Based on Hough Transform

    Attention has been focused on the robust moving human target detection in foliage-penetration environment, which presents a formidable task in a radar system because foliage is a rich scattering environment with complex multipath propagation and time-varying clutter. Generally, multiple-bounce returns and clutter are additionally superposed to direct-scatter echoes. They obscure true target echo and lead to poor visual quality time-range image, making target detection particular difficult. Consequently, an innovative approach is proposed to suppress clutter and mitigate multipath effects. In particular, a clutter suppression technique based on range alignment is firstly applied to suppress the time-varying clutter and the instable antenna coupling. Then entropy weighted coherent integration (EWCI) algorithm is adopted to mitigate the multipath effects. In consequence, the proposed method effectively reduces the clutter and ghosting artifacts considerably. Based on the high visual quality image, the target trajectory is detected robustly and the radial velocity is estimated accurately with the Hough transform (HT). Real data used in the experimental results are provided to verify the proposed method

    Dealing with the Bad Loans of the Chinese Banks

    Chinese banks suffer from serious financial fragility manifested by high proportions of non-performing loans and low capital-adequacy ratios. A key policy introduced recently by the Chinese government to reduce financial risks is the establishment of four asset management companies (AMCs) for dealing with bad loans. Drawing on the experiences of the Resolution Trust Corporation in the United States and bank restructuring in the Central European transition economies, we argue that the original AMC design will not be successful in resolving the existing non-performing loans (NPLs) nor will it prevent the creation of new bad loans. We recommend a modification of the current proposal that redefines the relationships between the parent banks and the AMCs by transferring the deposits of problem enterprises along with their NPLs from parent banks to AMCs.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/39741/3/wp357.pd

    Pion Form Factor in the kTk_T Factorization Formalism

    Based on the light-cone (LC) framework and the kTk_T factorization formalism, the transverse momentum effects and the different helicity components' contributions to the pion form factor Fπ(Q2)F_{\pi}(Q^2) are recalculated. In particular, the contribution to the pion form factor from the higher helicity components (λ1+λ2=±1\lambda_1+\lambda_2=\pm 1), which come from the spin-space Wigner rotation, are analyzed in the soft and hard energy regions respectively. Our results show that the right power behavior of the hard contribution from the higher helicity components can only be obtained by fully keeping the kTk_T dependence in the hard amplitude, and that the kTk_T dependence in LC wave function affects the hard and soft contributions substantially. As an example, we employ a model LC wave function to calculate the pion form factor and then compare the numerical predictions with the experimental data. It is shown that the soft contribution is less important at the intermediate energy region.Comment: 21 pages, 4 figure
